SPAR Sri Lanka Expands Into Two New Cities, Signalling a Bold Step Beyond the Western Province

The Capitalist – Business Desk

Colombo – Sri Lanka’s retail sector is entering a new phase of transformation as SPAR Sri Lanka strengthens its footprint beyond the Western Province with the launch of two flagship outlets in Kandy and Kurunegala. The expansion marks a significant milestone in the brand’s seven-year journey, reinforcing its ambition to deliver a premium supermarket experience to customers across the country.

The newly opened Kandy outlet and the upcoming Kurunegala branch, set to launch in April, reflect a clear strategy to bring international retail standards to key regional markets. Timed to coincide with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the expansion is positioned to meet increased festive demand while offering customers access to a more refined and convenient shopping environment.

At its core, SPAR Sri Lanka’s approach is built on its “glocal” philosophy—combining global retail expertise with a deep understanding of local consumer needs. This is reflected in every aspect of the shopping experience, from modern store layouts and high standards of hygiene to a carefully curated product mix that balances international variety with trusted local favourites.

Fresh food remains a cornerstone of the brand’s offering. Dedicated sections for produce, bakery, meat, and ready-to-eat meals provide customers with quality and convenience under one roof. At the same time, the availability of more than 1,000 international products positions SPAR as a destination for premium and hard-to-find items, elevating the overall supermarket experience.

Operational excellence continues to play a key role in maintaining these standards. From well-trained store teams to efficient distribution centres and a central kitchen focused on product innovation, SPAR Sri Lanka ensures consistency in both quality and service across its growing network.

The new outlets also highlight the brand’s investment in people and local communities. Each store is expected to generate around 100 jobs, offering structured career paths and specialised training in areas such as bakery, butchery, and coffee shop operations. This focus on skills development aligns with the brand’s commitment to building a professional retail workforce.

In addition, SPAR Sri Lanka works closely with over 50 local suppliers, providing them with direct market access while supporting the growth of small and medium-sized businesses. This collaboration strengthens the local supply chain while ensuring customers have access to fresh, high-quality products.

Affordability remains a key consideration, particularly in the current economic climate. The brand’s private label range of over 150 SPAR products delivers international quality at prices 10% to 15% lower than leading brands, allowing customers to enjoy premium standards without compromise. To celebrate the new openings, SPAR has also introduced special discounts on nearly 500 products.

Beyond physical stores, SPAR Sri Lanka is enhancing convenience through digital integration. The SPAR Rewards App offers customers access to exclusive deals and promotions, while a strengthened e-commerce operation ensures reliable delivery, often within the same or next day.

With extended operating hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and a retail environment that blends quality, variety, and convenience, the new flagship outlets in Kandy and Kurunegala represent more than expansion—they signal a shift in how premium supermarket experiences are delivered across Sri Lanka.

As SPAR Sri Lanka continues to grow, it is positioning itself as a destination where customers can expect not just groceries, but a complete, high-quality shopping experience defined by international standards and local relevance.
