CSE Slips as ASPI Falls Below 21,000 — Turnover Hits Rs. 6.2 Billion

September 8, 2025 | By TheCapitalist.lk Research Division – Equity & Capital Markets

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) closed lower today (8), with the All Share Price Index (ASPI) slipping 86.15 points or 0.41% to end the session at 20,905.83, dipping below the 21,000 mark.

Daily market turnover reached Rs. 6.2 billion, signaling steady investor activity despite the downward trend.

Analysts attributed the decline largely to profit-taking in blue-chip counters, though selective buying in banking and energy stocks offered some support. The S&P SL20 Index, which tracks the top 20 most liquid companies, also edged lower in line with broader sentiment.

Market participants remain cautious as they weigh global macroeconomic factors, including oil price volatility and currency movements, alongside local signals ahead of the third-quarter earnings season.

Despite the day’s pullback, the ASPI remains well above its levels at the beginning of the year, reflecting sustained investor appetite for Sri Lankan equities in 2025.
